Centerpulse Orthopedics Formalizes Minimally Invasive Surgery Program

10/23/2002

AUSTIN, Texas -- Centerpulse Orthopedics Inc., a subsidiary of Centerpulse, announces its CARE minimally invasive surgery (MIS) program. The CARE -- Comprehensive Accelerated Recovery Experience -- MIS program was founded on the philosophy that education and support is essential for surgeons to gain confidence implementing minimally invasive surgical techniques and technology.

"Positive patient outcomes indicate that MIS is here to stay. Patients who have minimally invasive surgery feel better about their body image, the impact of the surgery on them and the anticipated recovery," said Lawrence D. Dorr, MD, medical director of the Arthritis Institute at Centinela Hospital Medical Center and Queen of Angels-Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center. "Proper training and support, like that delivered through Centerpulse Orthopedics' CARE MIS program, is essential for orthopedic surgeons as they learn MIS techniques."

The CARE MIS program offers hands-on training in minimally invasive surgical techniques, as well as pre- and post-operative support. It also includes Centerpulse Orthopedics' current and forthcoming MIS offerings.

"MIS is an important trend in the orthopedics industry, as leading surgeons work with orthopedic companies to make hip and knee arthroplasty less invasive. While it's tempting to get caught up in the frenzy, we are taking a responsible approach that's focused on surgeon education and support," said David Floyd, president of Centerpulse Orthopedics Inc. "We are confident our approach is in the best interest of patients and surgeons alike and will ensure successful outcomes in the long-term."

Centerpulse Orthopedics has made major contributions to orthopedic technology and is continuously working to develop new and innovative products, including minimally invasive devices and instrumentation for hip and knee arthroplasty. The company established itself as an early leader in MIS innovation with the UniSpacer Knee System, a treatment for early-stage osteoarthritis of the knee. The UniSpacer, which requires no fixation or bone cuts, is the least invasive orthopedic implant for the medial compartment of the knee on the market today. Centerpulse Orthopedics is engaged in several MIS clinical studies with results available by the end of the year.

Centerpulse Orthopedics Inc. designs and manufactures medical devices for orthopedic markets worldwide at its Austin, Texas headquarters. The company, in conjunction with Centerpulse Orthopedics Ltd. in Switzerland, is one of the largest suppliers of orthopedic implants in the world and comprises the Orthopedics Division of Centerpulse, a global network of medical device companies. Centerpulse Orthopedics is a subsidiary of Centerpulse.
