Restylane and Perlane are the Newest Wrinkle Fighters

02/24/2003

MAUI, Hawaii -- "Facelifts will become passe and the use of current fillers to treat wrinkles will be dramatically reduced when the newest anti-wrinkle injectable Restylane and Perlane are approved in the U.S.," predicts Dr. Kenneth Beer, a cosmetic dermatologist and speaker during the 27th Annual Hawaii Dermatology Seminar sponsored by the Skin Disease Education Foundation.

Treatments with Restylane and Perlane -- clear hyaluronic acid gels -- last between six months to a year. Beer believes that these two products will cause a significant upsurge in cosmetic procedures performed by dermatologists. The outstanding results and minimal downtime of these products, especially when combined with Botox are producing results that until recently could only be obtained surgically. Unlike most present injectables, Restylane and Perlane are clear gels that don't tend to form visible bumps. Many dermatologists at the meeting feel that Restylane and Perlane are excellent wrinkle fillers for the lips, labial folds, smile lines and drooping corners of the mouth. Additionally, they can be used for smaller lines that cause lipsticks to bleed into lip wrinkles. Restylane and Perlane have caused an unprecedented sensation in Europe and Canada and is rapidly becoming a very popular cosmetic treatment in the U.S.

Beer warns that consumers should only receive Restylane and Perlane treatments from cosmetic dermatologists and plastic surgeons with a great deal of experience using these and other injectables. "There is a learning curve to this as with every procedure and I would guess that once these products have approval there will be a large number of unskilled injectors leaving their chosen specialties in order to cash in on the popularity of these procedures."

Beer notes that this has happened before with other cosmetic procedures such as Botox, where despite the best efforts of the manufacturer, diverse practitioners such as gynecologists, anesthesiologists and family practice physicians suddenly found themselves in the skin care and cosmetic business. He urges patients to check the credentials of practitioners administering Restylane and Perlane.
