Accreditation Association Appoints Three New Members to Board

WILMETTE, Ill. -– Susan Hughes, MD, PC, FACS; Gregg M. Menaker, MD; and Karen McKellar have been appointed to the board of directors of the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC). Respectively, the three represent the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery (AACS); the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery (ASDS); and the Medical Group Management Association (MGMA). They assumed their seats on the AAAHC board of directors at its November 6-7, 2004 meeting.

In announcing the new appointments, John E. Burke, PhD and CEO of the AAAHC, on behalf of the board, extended his gratitude to outgoing board members Sam Romeo, MD; William Hanke, MD; and Kimberly Butterwick, MD for their service to the AAAHC.

Dr. Hughes works and teaches in the oculoplastic department at Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia, Pa., and has a second office in Cherry Hill, N.J.  Board-certified in facial cosmetic surgery and ophthalmology, she is a fellow of both the American Society of Oculoplastic and Reconstructive Surgery and the American College of Surgeons. Dr. Hughes is also a member of the American Medical Association and the European Society of Oculoplastic and Reconstructive Surgery. Dr. Hughes has volunteered with Project Orbis and has operated and lectured in third world countries. She lectures locally, nationally and internationally in her field. After receiving her medical degree from George Washington University, she completed her internship at the University of California, Irvine, and her residency in ophthalmology at the Albany Medical Center. She completed her oculoplastic fellowship at the Harvard, Mass., Eye & Ear and at Moorfields Eye in London. Dr. Hughes is serving as one of the two AACS representatives to the AAAHC board.

Dr. Gregg Menaker is deputy chief, division of dermatology at Evanston Northwestern Healthcare (ENH). Previous positions include director of dermatologic surgery at ENH; assistant professor of dermatology at Northwestern University Medical School; director of dermatologic surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital; and instructor in dermatology at Harvard Medical School. He completed his undergraduate work at Amherst College, medical school at the University of Illinois, Chicago, and completed his internship in dermatology at Northwestern University, Evanston, Ill. Dr. Menaker completed his residency in dermatology at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee and later completed his fellowship under Ronald L. Moy, MD, at Mohs’ Surgery and Cosmetic Surgery, UCLA Medical Center, Los Angeles. He is certified as a diplomate of the American Board of Dermatology and the National Board of Medical Examiners, and holds medical licenses in California, Wisconsin, Massachusetts and Illinois. He is serving as one of the two ASDS representatives to the AAAHC board.

Karen M. McKellar is filling one of two seats for MGMA on the AAAHC board. She is the administrator of the Lake Chelan Clinic, PC in Chelan, Washington. Previous positions have included associate director of the Hall Health Primary Care Center at the University of Washington, and manager of the Family Medical Center and residency program at the University of Washington Hospital in Seattle. She is a member and past president of the Washington State Medical Group Management Association and was a member of the American College Health Association (another member organization of the AAAHC). She holds a BS in sociology from the University of Washington, Seattle, and has been an active surveyor for the AAAHC for several years.

Founded in 1979, the AAAHC has become the leader in ambulatory care accreditation. The AAAHC serves as an advocate for the provision of high quality healthcare through the development of nationally recognized standards and through its survey and accreditation programs. Currently, more than 1,900 organizations are accredited by the AAAHC nationwide. The AAAHC's accreditation is recognized as a symbol of quality by third party payors, medical organizations, liability insurance companies, state and federal agencies and the public.
