Oregon Plastic Surgeon Named New President of American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery

05/03/2005

NEW YORK -- Oregon plastic surgeon Mark L. Jewell, MD, is the new president of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS). ASAPS, with nearly 2,200 members, is the leading national organization of board-certified plastic surgeons specializing in cosmetic surgery of the face and body. The election of new officers was held on May 1, 2005 during the ASAPS annual meeting in New Orleans, which was attended by plastic surgeons from around the world.

Jewell is clinical assistant professor of plastic surgery at Oregon Health and Science University. An ASAPS member since 1992, he has served as president-elect, vice president, secretary, parliamentarian, and member at large on the ASAPS board of directors. He was chair of the ASAPS communications commission from 1997 to 2002, overseeing all public education activities. He is an associate editor of Aesthetic Surgery Journal, ASAPS' peer-reviewed clinical publication.

According to ASAPS statistics, nearly 11.9 million cosmetic procedures were performed in 2004, up 44 percent from 2003. ASAPS members performed more cosmetic surgical procedures per doctor than any other group of specialists. "ASAPS has been the leader in aesthetic surgery education for plastic surgeons for more than 35 years," says Jewell. "Today, our mission also includes educating the public. Cosmetic surgery can make a positive difference in peoples' lives, but they need to be well informed about their choices."
