Kimberly-Clark Introduces Secure-Fit on Select Surgical Gowns

07/28/2006

ROSWELL, Ga. - Building on its commitment of reducing healthcare-associated infections (HAIs), Kimberly-Clark Health Care has launched SECURE-FIT*, a technology designed to protect caregivers from fluid contamination that can result from glove slippage during surgery.  SECURE-FIT* refers to the proprietary, slip resistant coating that is thermally embedded into the surgical gown fabric on select Ultra Non-Reinforced and MICROCOOL* surgical gowns.

Market research conducted by Kimberly-Clark found that the distraction caused by glove slippage is a major concern for caregivers in the operating room.  In an effort to prevent slippage, some survey respondents indicated that they routinely improvise solutions to maintain the interface between the surgical gown and gloves.

“Proper precautions must be taken in today’s healthcare environment where fluid-intensive procedures put caregivers at risk of coming into contact with bloodborne pathogens,” said John Amat, vice president of sales and marketing for Kimberly-Clark Health Care. “By minimizing skin exposure to blood and other fluids, healthcare workers can feel confident that they are protected while delivering care in the OR.”

In addition to putting healthcare workers at risk of infection, Amat notes that a caregiver’s exposed skin can also compromise patient outcomes. “If a caregiver’s skin is exposed, over the course of the surgical procedure, their skin flora can flake off and potentially contaminate the patient’s wound,” Amat added.

Caregivers can feel confident that they are wearing a surgical gown with SECURE-FIT* because of its visually distinctive deep blue coloration on the gown sleeve.  Designed to work with market-leading surgical gloves, SECURE-FIT* maintains the comfort, barrier, flammability-resistance and low-linting properties that caregivers expect from KIMBERLY-CLARK* surgical gowns.
