AORN is Seeking Evaluation of the Universal Protocol

12/11/2006

The Association of periOperative Registered Nurses (AORN) is conducting an evaluation of  the Universal Protocol, which was implemented on July 1, 2004 to eliminate wrong-site, wrong-procedure, and wrong-person surgery. Joint Commission-accredited organizations are required to follow the Universal Protocol for patients having operative or other invasive procedures.

This evaluation is being conducted to determine what facilitates the use of the universal protocol and to also identify the barriers to implementation. A second summit on wrong-site surgery will be convened in 2007, and the results of this evaluation will be presented at the summit for discussion. AORN is asking its membership for input. All data will be aggregated and none can be linked to an individual participant.
