Carilion Buys Two ASCs in Virginia

ROANOKE, Va.─ Carilion Clinic, a nonprofit hospital system in southwestern Virginia, signed a deal Aug. 28 to buy the Center for Advanced Imaging and the Center for Surgical Excellence, the only two independent imaging and ambulatory surgery centers in Roanoke, Va.

The purchase has caused controversy as critics said it has contributed to “untaxed local health-care monopolies that drive the costs of care higher for patients and businesses.” Further demonstrated by Carilion’s  recent purchase of Virginia's largest cardiology practice Consultants in Cardiology. However, Carilion argued the purchases are simply part of a push to convert itself into a multispecialty clinic.
