Healthcare Job Gains in April, Led by Ambulatory Services

05/08/2009

While unemployment rates in the U.S. pushed up slight to 8.9 percent in April, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that the healthcare industry continues to churn out new jobs each month, seeing an increase of 17,000 jobs in April.

According to Modern Healthcare, the seasonally adjusted preliminary figures show nearly all job growth in the overall healthcare sector came in ambulatory services. Within the ambulatory field, physician offices added 2,200 jobs to a workforce of 2.3 million.

In contrast, hospitals posted a razor-thin gain of 600 jobs to a workforce of 4.7 million workers. That followed reports that the hospital sector between February and March had posted its first decrease in jobs in nearly five years.
