N.Y. ASC Fined for Waiving Fees to Gov't. Employees

10/27/2008

ALBANY, N.Y.—Capital Region Ambulatory Surgery Center paid $2.25 million in “fines for allegedly waiving out-of-pocket costs for services provided to government workers,” said state Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli Monday.

According to The Albany (N.Y.) Business Review, an audit revealed the surgery center “frequently and inappropriately waived the out-of-pocket fees for state and local government employees who belonged to the state-run Empire Plan.” As a result, Capital “wrongly received an extra $2.4 million in medical reimbursements from the state, because the state paid more for the center’s services since it did not participate in the Empire Plan.”

According to the Review, the center will now “become a provider with state-run Empire Plan.”
