BOULDER, Colo. -- Encision Inc. has been issued a significant patent by the United States Patent Office expanding the patent position of the company's core AEM(R) surgical instrument technology.

Encision's AEM Surgical Instruments are 'shielded and monitored' to advance patient safety and patient outcome in minimally-invasive surgery. The newly issued patent pertains to the AEM laparoscopic instruments, the array of replaceable inserts and the insert/instrument interface.

"The issuance of this fourth U.S. patent expands a strong intellectual property position for Encision and secures a broad proprietary position for the important AEM technology," stated James A. Bowman, president and CEO of Encision. "This new patent is significant because it relates to the disposable and reusable inserts used in AEM Instruments and protects the integration of important components within the AEM system.

"This patent expands our proprietary position on the consumable components of the AEM Instruments and will benefit Encision's business model going forward," added Bowman. "This completes the original intellectual property plan which Encision pursued for AEM Surgical Instruments, resulting in what we believe is one of the strongest positions in the industry."

Encision's AEM patent position includes three previously issued U.S. patents and the foreign complement in Japan, Canada, Australia and Europe.

AEM technology is changing the marketplace for electrosurgical devices and laparoscopic instruments by providing a solution to a well-documented patient safety risk in laparoscopic surgery. AEM technology has been recommended by sources from all groups involved with minimally-invasive surgery, including: surgeons, nurses, biomedical engineers, the medicolegal community, malpractice insurance carriers and electrosurgical device manufacturers. The breadth of endorsements continues to expand with recent insurance and medicolegal recommendations.

Encision Inc. designs and manufactures innovative surgical devices that allow the surgeon to optimize technique and patient safety during a broad range of surgical procedures. Based in Boulder, Colorado, the company pioneered the development of patented AEM Laparoscopic Instruments to improve electrosurgery and reduce the chance for patient injury in minimally invasive surgery.
