SOMERVILLE, N.J. -- CardioVations, a division of ETHICON, Inc., a Johnson & Johnson Company, announced today the launch of PORT ACCESS* PRECISION SERIES, a new line of surgical instruments for use in minimally invasive valve repair procedures. Combining high-quality engineering with highly durable materials, PORT ACCESS PRECISION SERIES Surgical Instruments are designed to enhance precision, reliability and control in minimally invasive valve surgery.

The PORT ACCESS PRECISION SERIES initially includes specially designed scissors, forceps and needle drivers available in a wide variety of sizes and for a range of surgical functions. Designed and manufactured by Jakoubek Medizintechnik GmbH in Liptingen, Germany, each instrument is precision-engineered to maximize balance and tactile responsiveness for surgeons. The integrated flushport design allows for automated processing and intraoperative flushing to help maintain a high level of instrument performance. PORT ACCESS PRECISION SERIES line of instruments feature improved ergonomic design and lightweight construction to enhance stability and reduce surgeon fatigue. Crafted from titanium and stainless steel, PORT ACCESS PRECISION SERIES Surgical Instruments are built to withstand the rigors of repeat use and sterilization while maintaining the same high levels of performance in every procedure. PORT ACCESS PRECISION SERIES Surgical Instruments are backed by a comprehensive two-year warranty.

“The introduction of the PORT ACCESS PRECISION SERIES is great news for the growing number of patients undergoing minimally invasive valve repair each year," said Dr. J. Alan Wolfe, a noted minimally invasive cardiac surgeon based in Atlanta. "These instruments position the surgeon to deliver high levels of accuracy and control while also offering important advantages in durability, ease of sterilization, and ease of use."

PORT ACCESS PRECISION SERIES is the latest addition to PORT ACCESS Products, CardioVations' complete portfolio of disposable devices and reusable instruments for minimally invasive cardiovascular procedures.

Approximately 27,000 isolated mitral valve repair surgeries are performed each year. Minimally invasive valve procedures currently account for about 27 percent of those surgeries, and the use of minimally invasive techniques in valve repair surgery has increased by about 19 percent annually in recent years. Compared to traditional "open-chest" valve repair procedures which involve cutting open the breastbone to access the heart, minimally invasive valve surgery is performed via one or more small incisions between the ribs. This minimally invasive approach typically results in reduced trauma and pain, less scarring, and shorter hospital stays for patients.

"Increasingly, surgeons and patients are considering the option of minimally invasive valve repair when they learn about the advantages over traditional open-chest procedures," said Daniel Brostoff, group product director for PORT ACCESS Products. "The global demand for durable and high-performance minimally invasive surgical instruments continues to grow, and CardioVations is meeting that demand with state-of-the-art products such as PORT ACCESS PRECISION SERIES Surgical Instruments."

CardioVations offers a comprehensive professional education program for PORT ACCESS Products. The Program includes one-on-one in-service training on site, observation opportunities at one of CardioVations' professional training facilities, and on-site case experience with clinical specialists who provide expert training and guidance for surgical teams.

Nationwide distribution of PORT ACCESS PRECISION SERIES Surgical Instruments begins immediately.
