Mississippi Valley Surgery Center Appoints New President and CEO
Michael Patterson, 40, took the reins at the center Jan. 3. He most recently was vice president of hospital operations at Trinity Regional Health System. He previously headed up a surgical center in Cedar Rapids that involved more than 100 physicians.
With a background in U.S. Navy and in health administration, Patterson will be working with the 13 physicians at the surgery center to discover a new way of thinking for the industry. He points out that the landscape is rapidly changing with the implementation of federal healthcare legislation.
"No matter what, we have to improve outcomes and decrease costs," he says. "You could give an insurance card to every person in the United States, but if we don't have coordinated care and a focus on lean processes and techniques, we won't bend the cost curve."

Iowa Outpatient Clinics Set to Open in Fall
The Iowa River Landing outpatient clinic is on track to open in October 2012 with expectations of reducing visits to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics’ main campus by at least 200,000 annually, but officials say the hospital’s patient numbers could climb back to pre-River Landing levels in three years.
Dr. Jean Robillard, University of Iowa, vice president of medical affairs, says leaders envision a future where the on-campus hospital is used mostly for inpatient programs, such as surgeries and critical care, with outpatient functions moved when feasible to off-site clinics where parking and access is easier for patients.

Montana Hospital Plans to Open Orthopedic ASC
Shriners Hospital for Children plans to build an outpatient orthopedic surgery center in spring of 2015 instead of its original concept of a seven-story acute care hospital.
The organization has decided on a 60,000 to 80,000-square-foot outpatient center at 4400 Clayton Ave. because there isn't a need for a large acute care hospital. The existing hospital at 2001 S. Lindbergh Blvd. in Frontenac only has an inpatient census of 10 patients a day, says John Gloss, an administrator with Shriners Hospital for Children-St. Louis.
"We will be in such close proximity to (St. Louis) Children's Hospital that it makes sense for us to utilize their inpatient services," Gloss states. "We can take advantage of the inpatient capability that Children's has, but still have outpatient services at our place, as well as physical and occupational therapy."
